Kang Bed-Stove
Chinese traditional heated masonry platformkang shared by guests of a one-bedroom hostel in a then wild area east of A wideshared by guests of a one-bedroom hostel in a then wild area east of Tonghua, Jilin, seen by Henry E.M. James in 1887
The kang (Chinese: 炕; pinyin: kàng; Manchu: nahan, Kazakh: кән) is a traditional heated platform, 2 meters or more in length, used for living, working, entertaining and sleeping in the northern part of China, where the winter climate is cold. Its interior cavity, leading to an often convoluted chimney system, channels hot exhaust gases from a wood/coal fireplace, usually the cooking fire from an adjacent room that serves as a kitchen, sometimes from a stove located below ground level. This allows for a longer contact time between the exhaust (which still contains a lot of heat from the combustion source) and (indirectly) the interior of the part, hence more heat transfer/recycling back into the part, making it a ducted heating system similar to the Roman hypocaust. [1] A kang that covers the entire floor is called a dikang (Chinese: 地炕; pinyin: dì kàng; lit. to be derived from the heating floor of the bed called huoqiang found in Neolithic times in China, according to archaeological excavations of building remains at Banpo Xi'an Literary evidence of Li Daoyuan's commentary on the Water Classic also gives evidence of heated floors during the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 AD), although this was not explicitly named dikang:[1]
In Guanji Temple [near present-day Fengrun in Hebei Province], there is a large conference hall. The kang may have evolved into its bed design due to ongoing cultural changes during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, as tall furniture and chairs became more prevalent than the earlier style of floor-sitting furniture and low in Chinese culture. [1] The first kang remains were discovered in Ninghai, Heilongjiang province, in the Longquanfu Palace (699-926) of Balhae origin. Culture[edit]

Traditional Chinese Dwellings (Zhongguo chuantong minju) (a bilingual text) has some line drawings of kangs. He says the kang is used to cook meals and heat the room, making full use of the heat-holding capacity of loess [soil used to make adobe]. It has been speculated that one of the oldest forms of Chinese dwelling, heated cave dwellings known as yaodong, found throughout northern China, would have been uninhabitable without the kang. [1]
The kang was also an important feature of traditional dwellings in often frigid Manchuria, where it was known as nahan in Manchu. See also[edit]
