How To Build A 12X20 Cabin On A Budget

I am a licensed contractor, so I

clearly understand building codes and safety, and I still don't see any problems

with your shed/cabin. Building codes are different everywhere, and I

builds a small 20x20 cabin using almost similar techniques 25

a few years ago when I was very young and had limited building skills at the

time. My little cabin was in a rural county where there were

there was no building code at the time, so I could do it however I wanted. I

used 6x6 pressure treated posts (no concrete either), although I put

about 4 feet down on undisturbed hard ground with about an inch of

gravel at the bottom of the hole, then packed them down with the dirt I have

dug from them. With hindsight, if I had to do it again, I would have

placed my ledger boards for my floor joists directly above the 6x6

posts, rather than bolting them to the 6x6s. There is still the shear concern, but after 25 years

no problem, I feel pretty good. I inspect them from time to time and

even considered making some changes to this part of the cabin once I

learned better techniques, but my boards and bolts still look so clean

and new as the day I put them on. 25 years of good and loyal service, so

I just left them as they were and believe it or not it didn't.
